A Siberian Night On Kinder

We’re very fortunate where we live. About four miles from our front door and we can be somewhere like Mermaid’s Pool. Not a bad spot for a couple of hour’s walk.

Kim and I should have been backpacking in the Lakes this weekend, but a bit of an overspend on our finances this month made us think twice about trotting up there for a couple of days, when we’re going up for a week or so at Easter anyway.

A night out still seemed like a good idea though, so Kinder seemed to fit the bill nicely.

The forecast was for dry weather, but with an arctic wind ‘…coming straight from Siberia…’

They weren’t kidding. The arctic wind was stronger than we expected too and never stopped, all night long.

My fingers got so cold filtering water, that they hurt for ages. And I actually wished that I’d carried my big duvet jacket up there, even for sitting in the tent.

In fact, even with no snow down at all, it was infinitely colder than the night out we’d had there in January.

Still good fun though (once I’d warmed up, anyway) and after taking the direct route up there on the Saturday, we took a slightly longer one back on the Sunday, by circumnavigating the Reservoir.

And if you’re wondering who the random guy is in the photos, that’s Hamish – Kim’s husband – who accompanied us on our walk up there, but didn’t even stay for a cup of tea! As soon as the tents were up, he was off back down to the village, to the pub and a pizza.

  1. All looks very familiar that does. I was on a warm sofa last night with a DVD and a bottle of wine. It’s cold in Nottingham today so must have been very cold up there.

  2. We were up on Blencathra in that Siberian wind (and snow). I dropped my gloves on the ascent and had to go down a bloody long way again for them but, with that wind, I knew it was essential!
