Well, this was our first visit to the Tweedsmuir hills and we definitely plan to go back again. We had a great fortnight exploring and wandering around the tracks and trails – and so did the dogs! Superb rolling hills, wonderful views and not difficult to find walks which were suitable for a recuperating broken ankle either.
Also, the fact that wild camping is allowed meant that we didn’t use a caravan site once over the whole fortnight but found some lovely spots to park up with the van overnight.
We met up with the Writesofway Gang one day for a very pleasant wander in the Moniaive area and by the end of the second week I was starting to venture out on some slightly more challenging trails, too.
I plan to write up a couple of the walks separately later on, but in the meantime here’s a short slide show (4 minutes), giving a flavour of the trip:

Well Dixie is nearly 11 now and always crashes out after a walk these days!

Thanks 🙂 Do you find your slideshows take ages to upload? Even this short one must have taken nearly an hour. I suppose it could be to do with broadband speed? Hayfield village is right at the end of the line for broadband and the internet can generally be painfully slow.

I upload to YouTube and embed them from there. I take my photos at maximum resolution and the video clips are in HD so a 4-5 minute show is about 250-300Mb so it does take a couple of hours to upload. I normally set them to upload ovenight. I produce the slideshows mainly for my own benefit to watch on TV at home but I add them to the blog posts anyway as it gives a bit of variety

Gosh, uploading to YouTube first sounds complicated! It is great watching them on the tv though isn’t it? We’ve only just got a television that’ll do that, so it’s still very much a novelty!

You just need an account on YouTube (you can use a Google Account if you have one), then log in, click on “Upload”, find the the file and away you go. Once uploaded you click on “Share”, copy the URL into the blog and wrap a standard HTML code around it to isert it and set the image size you want and there you go.

The first bit sounds fine, but when you say ‘wrap a standard HTML code around it’, is that something that happens without me thinking about it, or is it something I’d have to specifically do? If so, I don’t think I’d know how!

Allyou need to do is type the following into your blog post where you want the video to appear:
Where I typed “share” you just copy in the URL you get when you click on share in YouTube. Sounds alot more complicated than it is

We’ve overnighted several times in this area with our van without any problems – Scotland is much more laid back on access issues.

Yes It’s great when farmers etc just wave and say hello as they pass the van. Come 10 miles back over the border and into the Kielder area and all the ‘Get Lost’ signs start to wind you up…

Chrissie , cant seem to play your video. It may be my poor broad band speed. I like the Southern Uplands, no further for me than the Lake District, but much quieter.

Sorry about that Mark. We have slow broadband in Hayfield too and I often have to let people’s videos play through once in silence while I go off and do something else for half an hour, and then they seem to play through ok the second time.
Yes, we eventually gave up on the Lake District some time ago after years of trips there – it just seemed to get both too crowded and too expensive! We then started walking regularly in Northumberland but obviously the Southern Uplands are not really much further. Quiet, peaceful, great scenery.. 🙂
